Of course, ‘you can’t teach an old dog a new trick’ is a myth. Like humans, dogs learn new things every day throughout life. My ten-year old Golden is still mentally alert and eager to ‘play’ in new ways.

Physical limitations should always be taken into account. The three-year-old dog has a huge capacity for running, jumping, retrieval, obstacle course maneuvers and so forth. The old dog may still want to do all those things, even learning new configurations, but is tired more easily and loses interest more rapidly.

Take training sessions in shorter time chunks and expect to carry out many more repetitions. Make obstacles lower and runs shorter. Throw the ball two or three times, rather than twenty. Hearing loss occurs in older dogs too. Don’t assume they are ignoring you when far away and facing away.

Allow for longer recovery periods between sessions. An active game of fetch is still a possible source of enjoyment. Restrain food rewards for older dogs because they gain weight more rapidly and shed pounds slower.

As with younger dogs, consistency is still essential. Focus more on building on the dog’s existing strengths, since older dogs are less malleable. One individual will be excellent at fetch and release, the other more inclined to hang onto the ball.

The dog more inclined to hang onto a ball is a good candidate for learning to pull a wagon by a rope. The better ‘fetch and release’ dog can more easily be taught to get a plastic food container. Handy things, since trainers get older too.

When it comes to dog obedience training, the “recall” command is quite important. In fact, some dog trainers would argue that it is the most important of all the commands. This is the process by which the owner calls back the dog, and asks the dog to return to them. Now, if you’re training the dog for the first time, it is likely that the dog will not respond. When this happens, the owner should not become upset or punish the dog. The thing the owner must perform is a correction. The owner should always approach the dog, and they should not punish the dog under any circumstances.

The correction process is another important part of the dog training method. Under no circumstances should this process involve physically abusing the dog. The use of force in dog training has been the subject of a great deal of controversy. Even if the owner can stop the dog’s bad behavior by striking them, this will cause stress to the dog, and the dog will naturally lose the necessary enthusiasm to continue with the task. The dog may also become aggressive. Ultimately, it is up to the person training the dog to decide how much force they should use, but many experts agree that the dog should never be hit.

One technique that is sometimes used to stop bad behavior is to quickly pull on the dog’s leash and lead the dog as a result for not following through on a specific command. Another method that is used to correct bad behavior is isolation. When a dog does something wrong, the owner/handler can simply take the dog to an area and leave it there alone for a set period of time, where it will be isolated from anyone it wants to interact with. The process of teaching puppies is also a prominent part of dog obedience training.

While the puppy prenatal phase has been traditionally overlooked by dog trainers, many experts are now taking a second look at it. A puppy will react to the touch of the mother’s abdomen. Some do trainers believe that the dog’s sense of touch can be developed before the dog is even born. The process of dog training can sometimes be tedious, but in the end, it can also be quite rewarding. There are a number of useful guides and books which can assist you in the dog training process.

Do you know that you can train your dog by yourself? Yes, I really mean it. Many people have no idea how to train their dogs. It is not that hard to train your dog these days because there are a lot of information out there that can help everyone learn to understand dogs and train them well in no time.

Training your dog on your own may seem like a big task but it can be a very rewarding one. There are a lot of benefits to doing it yourself. One of the most important benefits is that your dog will respect you and listen to you not just the dog trainer. Your relationship between you and your dog will be stronger. You will feel a great sense of accomplishment if you do it yourself. And of course, it will save you a fortune.

The first step to training your dog is to do a daily physical exercise. A tired dog is a good dog. Then, you will need to teach your dog some obedience training, which is a way to communicate what you expect of them in a way they understand.

The key to having a well-trained, happier dog is to meet your dog’s physical and mental needs first through exercise, obedience, play and affection. Secondly, create personal training goals and stay consistent with your expectation of your dog. Remembering, a well-trained dog is a happier dog because they love to spend more time with you. Training your dog is not that hard if you are patient and consistent.

Dog behavior training is the process by which a person trains a dog to carry out various functions. These functions will be carried out based on commands that are given to the dog by its owner. Because dogs are highly intelligent creatures, they can be trained to carry out a number of functions, from guiding the blind to finding people who have been hurt. There are also a number of ways in which a dog can be trained. Some of these areas include guarding, tracking, herding, and hunting. While some dogs are taught functions only for the purpose of amusing their owners, others are taught life saving functions.

Dogs can be taught to find people in the aftermath of a disaster, and they can also be used to hunt or perform tricks in a circus. Because dogs are essentially pack animals, they have a natural mechanism which makes them want to work with other dogs. Over thousands of years, humans learned how to use this instinct to their own advantage, and one of the primary techniques which have been used to enhance this technique is selective breeding. In dog behavior training, the handler is the person who happens to be working with the dog at any given time.

Because dogs have lived around humans for a long period of time, they are expected to behave in a specific manner. It is of great importance that the dog is a joy to be around. The dog must keep its owner safe, and it must be safe toward other dogs and their owners. It must be emphasized that dogs will not learn these things on their own. They must be taught these functions and processes. Perhaps the hardest part of training the dog is doing so in a manner that is stern, but not abusive. Despite all the different techniques that have been developed to train dogs over the years, they all boil down to a simple concept, and this is that the dog must be rewarded for good behavior while ignoring or changing bad behavior.

In basic dog training, the first thing that the dog will need to learn is the basics, and these are to sit, down, stay, close, and recall. of all these commands, perhaps the most important is “recall.” If the dog doesn’t respond, the owner must not punish it.

When it comes to dog house training, many pet owners choose to hire expert dog trainers. One thing that I should emphasize about these dog trainers is that in most cases, instead of training the dog directly, the trainer will teach the owners how to train their dogs. While the owner can also send the dog to a training school, eventually the owner must be able to handle the dog themselves, and enhance the techniques that the dog has been taught. It should also be noted that the dog training process is never ending. The owner must be willing to continually train the dog over the course of its life.

Dog house training is the process by which the dog is trained to live in the house. Living in a house with humans will require the dog to behave in the proper manner. If the dog uses the bathroom on the floor or carpet, this can be a source of frustration for its owners, so one of the most important parts of dog house training is potty training. The dog must be taught to signal its owner when it wants to go to the bathroom. Attending a dog training class with the dog can be very effective, because the dog and its owner can work together as a team.

One important aspect of dog training that an owner must understand is that sending the dog to a school and not being present may not be effective. It is the owner, not the handler at the school, that the dog will spend much of its time with, and the process of training the dog requires the owner to be taught as much as the dog must be taught, especially if they are not familiar with the dog training process. Many of these classes are offered by kennels and pet stores, as well as trainers who are independent.

The benefit for training your dog to the “down” position is that your dog is not knocking over the furniture or small children. It is also leads naturally to subsequent behaviors such as “rollover”, “crawl” and other keen tricks.

Fortunately, training your dog to lie down is not that difficult. By observing the dog and waiting for a movement from standing or sitting to down, when you see it occurring, execute a unique voice command and hand gesture.

After the command when the behavior is complete, praise lavishly. At first, the dog will have no idea why it’s being praised. With repetition the behavior will follow the command. It is results you are after.

Most dogs will not perform the desired behavior on command the first few times. Be patient and clear and consistent. Encourage the behavior by taking a treat or favored toy and putting the dog in a “sit”, and then move the treat or toy all the way to the ground just in front of its nose.

After several repetitions with the treat or toy, try just using a “waving down” hand movement, palm toward the floor or ground. Never reward with praise or treat until the behavior is complete and correct, but also don’t become tense or angry after failure.

Remembering, patient and commitment are keys to successfully training any dog behavior.

Dog aren’t really stubborn. But they don’t know exactly what they want. They just want to explore the environment. They sniff everything, turn things over, dig and snatch small objects. Therefore, when training your dog, a backyard with a clear area or a large room with few small objects on the floor is best because your dog will pay more attention to you than anything else’s.

Start by facing the dog, putting it in a sit. Execute the “stay” command, then back away a step or two. Issue the hand-gesture and voice command. Praise lavishly for the correct behavior, but never reward incorrect ones.

Repeat, stepping further away. If the dog comes too soon, put it in a sit/stay and try again.
If the dog won’t come at all, encourage with a treat or favorite toy.

For the slow learners, leash and collar training can be a useful supplement. If the dog refuses to come, give a gentle but unmistakable tug while executing the voice command and hand gesture.

For the dog who comes a little, get a long leash or rope and wrap around a tree or post. As the dog lifts off too early, give the leash a tug and execute a “stay” command.

Please remember that dogs don’t understand the usefulness of “come” or any other human command right away. So you need to be patient when training your dog. Most dogs will prove themselves eager to please and responsive to correct behavior in no time.

A proper trained dog is a joy to be around for both the owner and anyone else you happen to come in contact with. Not only will it make for a better relationship but it can help save your pet from being hurt or worse, if he is able to be called to your side to avoid danger.

You should always use a positive approach to training your dog. Rewarding him with a treat and praise will go a lot further than hitting and yelling. Dogs and puppies want your approval and will try to please you to get your praise.

Once you have taught your dog the two basic commands of “sit” and “down”, you are ready to move on to the “stay” command.

First, train the dog to “sit” on command using the word and hand signals. I snap my fingers and simultaneously flip my extended index finger down at an angle to the ground. This gets the dog’s attention-without tying up my hands with a clicker- and shows the proper direction for the dog’s rear. It works surprisingly well.

Then with the pup, teen or mature dog in the sit, I thrust a hand in the dog’s direction palm first and fingers raised giving the voice command “stay”! Not yelling, just distinct and audible over other noise and distractions. Hand movements should be precise and unique to a particular command/behavior.

The dog will tend to follow, so repeat the hand gestures for sit and stay. If the dog fails to comply, take a treat or toy and move it over the dog’s head and slightly back of the eyes. Still visible, but in a direction that forces the chin up. Some dogs will rotate around. Repeat until you get the correct behavior then praise lavishly.

Some dogs will tend to lie down during exercise, especially as you back away a few feet. You may have to train an “up”-“sit” combination before mastering “stay”. Breeds and individuals will vary in how long- how many repetitions over how many days-it takes them to consistently obey, but almost all get it eventually.

Why is training your dog to sit so important? Because when a dog sits he is more attentive, making it easier to follow further commands.

Teaching your dog to sit can be easier or more difficult depending on breed, individual and training style. However, almost every dog can learn this basic move in a short period to time.

First, you have to observe him closely. The idea is to catch him in the middle of performing the behavior and say “sit” and gesture. Always associate a unique hand signal and tone with the command. Hold off on food treats. Save the bribes until you really need them.

At first the dog will have no idea why you are so happy. But dogs tend to be happy when you as the alpha are happy, and upset when you are not.

When you want to initiate a sit, stand and face the dog then issue the command, then wait for the desired response. Some will get it after the first couple of tries, some will take ten or more. Now let’s try the other techniques.

With a treat or a favored toy, face the dog and place it above his head and slightly behind the forehead, but still visible. The dog will tend to look up and stretch its chin slightly backward. When you have this attention move the treat slowly back toward the tail.

Some dogs will respond by backing up. If so, try the technique near the couch or a fence where he has nowhere to go. When the dog starts to sit, give the command and hand signal. At the completion of the sit, praise lavishly and give the reward.

For the stubborn or slow learner, give the command and at the same time push gently on the back near the tail as you lift his chin. Praise and reward anyway, even though you had to force him to sit. Take special care with his young hips.

Training your dog to sit might take time. Don’t be harsh. Don’t give up easily. And most importantly, never let him train you.
